Dr. Zilong Wen’s laboratory has recently identified a myeloid-like cell population in zebrafish epidermis. This newly identified myeloid-like cell population, designated as metaphocytes, are of ectodermal origin but shares high similarities with mesoderm-derived conventional macrophages in the skin.
Congratulations to Prof. Jiguang Wang on winning the “School of Engineering Young Investigator (Rising Star) Research Award 2018/19. He received the award plaque and cash prize from the Dean of Engineering Prof Tim Cheng in the School Board meeting on 26 April, 2019.
A research team consisting of scientists from the HKUST, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Jinan University discovered a new mechanism that could delay the degeneration of injured nerves, bringing new hope to the treatment of nerve damage and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
aTyr Pharma, Inc., a biotherapeutics company engaged in the discovery and development of innovative medicines based on novel immunological pathways, recognized the collaboration between its Hong Kong subsidiary, Pangu BioPharma (Pangu), and HKUST for contributions leading to the discovery of ATYR1923, which is currently being evaluated in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis.
Prof. Mingjie Zhang and his research team published a paper in the journal Cell, titled “Reconstituted postsynaptic density as a molecular platform for understanding synapse formation and plasticity”. This paper has recently been selected as one of the “Best Of Cell 2018” research article collections to showcase this past year’s most exciting cell biology research.
Our LIFS faculties won two of the seven awards presented by the Croucher Foundation this year. They are Dr. NGUYEN Tuan Anh, Assistant Professor of the Division of Life Science, who received the Croucher Innovation Awards 2018, and Prof. WEN Zilong, Professor of Division of Life Science, who received the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship 2019.
