Division of Life Science Research Assistant in Computer Analysis (TC-012019-RA_CA)

Research Assistant positions are available in the Division of Life Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
The appointee will support various research projects within the Division of Life Science by conducting computational analyses. The appointee will report to a faculty member or his delegates, but may work closely with graduate students or research staff within the Division. This is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself into an inter-disciplinary field that brings together information technology with biology. Duties include analyzing data sets using existing open-source tools; developing and deploying custom-made scripts or programs that integrate with other tools; maintaining good records of the analyses performed and attend project meetings as needed. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, or a related field. Interest in the life sciences field would be beneficial but prior knowledge in this area is not required. Knowledge of Linux- based systems and shell scripting; additional programming skills including Perl, Python, and R.; good organizational skills with an appreciation of software engineering practices and the ability to work independently are required. Familiarity with the administration of Linux systems including troubleshooting software installation, deployment, and execution would be an asset. Candidates should also have strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively in English.
